Eons Announces 2006 Trends for the 50-Plus Market, Predicts 2007 Will Be Year of the Boomer
Eons.com Takes Lead as the Pulse of Growing Online Boomer Market, Sees 2007 as Strongest Yet for Wired 50-Plus
Eons™, the 50-plus media company for boomers and seniors created by Jeff Taylor, is taking the lead in defining how Americans over 50 are dominating the Web – from the way they’re finding new
friends and romance, to how they’re chasing down their
LifeDreams™, to the products, entertainment and content they’re voting for with their fingertips.
Eons – with more than 1 million unique visitors to its Web site – is now revealing insights based on its members’ online habits in 2006 and is predicting how powerfully baby boomers will build their online influence in 2007. With five months of data since Eons’ launch in July, 2006, they’re offering a first glimpse at their findings titled “Eons 50-Plus Boomer Online Trends for 2006,” found at www.eons.com/media/2006Annuals.pdf.
“Advertisers and marketers can’t afford to ignore the incredible power, wealth and online choices of the 78 million baby boomers in America,” says Taylor, founder and CEO of Eons. “Today, more than 35 million people age 50 to 64 are on the Web, but until now, they’ve been practically invisible with no clear online destination created by and for them. The information our users are sharing with us sends a message loud and clear: The Web is where they’re turning to connect with others who share their interests and for information about their health, their money and their fun.”
As members engage with the site through creating profiles; joining and starting groups; rating and ranking Web sites and content; building their lists of LifeDreams; and using other interactive tools, they provide a rich glimpse into where the heads and hearts are of this 50-plus boomer generation. Using this information, as well as data provided by corporate partners, Eons has assembled a portrait of 50-plus Americans online. Most notable among its findings was the growing popularity of online communities.
“Baby boomers are ready to play, and they’ve finally discovered the Web as the place they go to connect with each other through communities and blogs,” says Taylor, founder and CEO of Eons. “They’re sending a clear message that the Web isn’t just a place for the young.”
One of the key findings of “Eons 50-Plus Boomer Online Trends for 2006,” was the Web’s appeal to boomers as a venue for meeting new friends, creating dialogues about their deepest interests, and finding romance. Communities are among the most popular and fastest growing part of Eons, with more than 1,200 active groups, a number that is growing by the day. The 10 most-visited Eons communities are:
“When you look at the groups that Eons members are most excited about, it jumps out at you that they’re ready to meet new people, build relationships and challenge themselves to reach new levels,” says Linda Natansohn, Senior Vice President of Strategic Development at Eons. “Eons is the center of gravity for everything 50-plus. People over 50 are constantly breaking long-held stereotypes about aging, and it’s going to take a whole different set of resources to understand this generation, their dreams and their goals. Eons is saying, ‘Here’s a portrait of what today’s 50-plus looks like, and here’s what they’re thinking about and accomplishing on the Web.’ ”
2007: Boomers Dominate the Web
In 2006, the first baby boomers turned 60; 2007 is the year that the Eons Generation will adopt the Web and fully explore the many possibilities of “Web 2.0” including social networking, enhanced communication tools and increased interactivity capabilities.
“Social networking is going to get even more explosive in 2007,” says Taylor. “Boomers have shown us – by the ways they’re using Eons to build their online worlds in their own unique ways – that the Web is no longer a place where you simply check your stock price or the weather forecast. This is a generation that understands the Web, and 2007 is will be the year when baby boomers put their unique stamp on this technology. Marketers and advertisers who ignore them do so at their peril.”
