Black Duck Demonstrates Vital Need for Software Compliance Management Among Game Developers
Exhibits at Game Developers Conference 2007 Educate on Need to Check all Software Code Against Myriad Requirements
Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of software compliance management solutions, today announced it will be demonstrating the importance of “knowing your code” to attendees at the Game Developers Conference 2007, held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. During exhibition hall hours from March 7 through March 9, Black Duck will exhibit in booth 5101 NH.
Game developers are adopting newer models of software development that rely on the use of software components from a variety of sources, including proprietary and other third-party code sets, as well as re-use of components from other projects. These techniques make the development process more efficient and speed time to market. This model necessitates a platform, like Black Duck’s family of solutions, that will manage the policies governing the creation, distribution, deployment and commercial use of developed software code.
“Software gaming is a huge and growing industry and many say it will soon eclipse the motion picture industry in terms of size,” said Douglas Levin, president and CEO of Black Duck Software. “With game development, time is often of the essence, and developers are capitalizing on new techniques that create new efficiencies in the process. Black Duck has created a platform that manages the requirements on code that result from new software development models, whether dictated by the software license on code components, or whether dictated by government regulations on the strength of encryption applied to certain code.”
At the Black Duck booth, visitors will receive demonstrations of the company’s protexIP solutions, which are used by developers, legal experts and other managers to help ensure a developed game isin compliance with software licenses that apply to various components within the code. Company representatives will also discuss exportIP, the newest addition to the Black Duck solution set.
Companies use exportIP to help ensure that developed code does not violate government restrictions regarding the strength of encryption that can be exported. By managing the process of receiving export authorization, Black Duck further optimizes the development process by removing unnecessary delays that can arise from encryption that is not in compliance.
