Black Duck Software Executive to Moderate Panel on GPL v3 and Other Open Source Licenses
Intellectual Property Attorneys to Discuss Proper Use of Code Components at LinuxWorld Korea Conference & Expo
Black Duck Software, the leading global provider of software governance solutions, today announced that Vice President and General Counsel Kat McCabe will moderate the panel session titled “Understanding Open Source Licensing and GPL v3” at the LinuxWorld Korea Conference & Expo in Seoul, South Korea on Friday, June 22 at 2:50 p.m.
Ms. McCabe’s panel is timely, given that the Free Software Foundation is expected to release a new GNU Public License (GPL), GPL v3, in early July, following an in-depth community review process. She is in a unique position to provide an objective viewpoint and lead the discussion, as Black Duck sells solutions that help companies navigate the myriad licensing and other requirements that apply to the software they build, deploy or sell. Ms. McCabe is an active participant in the development of GPL v3.
“Managing licenses and their use is becoming a standard part of the development and deployment processes at many companies, and the discussion will highlight how this is being achieved, said McCabe. “The panel will also educate attendees on the open source licenses that exist and could apply to the software code within companies, and during that part of the event we will discuss GPL v3.”
The current GPL license version applies to many popular open source applications, including Linux. For that reason, the changes to the license affect thousands of companies around the world that incorporate GPL-governed open source applications and code components. Panelists participating in Ms McCabe’s session will be Software Freedom Law Center Counsel Karen Sandler, Sewha Park & Goo Senior Partner Jong Baek Park, Red Hat Senior Commercial Attorney Erika Nelson and Trilegal Partner Rahul Matthan.
In March, Black Duck introduced new capabilities within its protexIP™/development solution that prepares its customers for the introduction of the new GPL license. The latest version of protexIP includes a user interface that can compare a code component against two different versions of the same code in the Black Duck KnowledgeBase. Customers can then evaluate whether the component matches more closely with code governed by one version of the GPL or the newer version of the license.
The new version of protexIP which is being demonstrated in the Black Duck Korea booth at the LinuxWorld show, also features a Code Label™ reporting function, which creates a report detailing the contents of a software development code base that looks similar to a food ingredient label.
