IMlogic Threat Center’s August Report Reveals Over 1000 Cumulative Targeted Attacks on Instant Messaging Networks in 2005
IM and P2P Attacks Increase More than Ten-Fold Over Previous Year; Surge Attributed to Widespread Growth of IM Worms
Waltham, MA, September 1, 2005 - The IMlogic Threat Center, the industry’s first global consortium to provide threat detection and protection for instant messaging (IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, today reported IM threat statistics for the month of August 2005. The report highlights a 3500 percent increase in IM threats including viruses, worms, spam over IM (SPIM), malware and phishing attacks.
The statistics released today by the IMlogic Threat Center provide key metrics on the continued attacks IM networks are experiencing from malicious code and worm writers. Key data points released include:
Cumulative IM threats reported for the 2005 calendar year surpassed 1000 unique incidents, more than ten times the total threats reported in all of 2004;
A 3,543 percent increase in reported incidents of new IM/P2P viruses, worms, and malicious code compared to the same month last year;
More than 1,158 IM/P2P threats in the first eight months of 2005, a 1,968 percent increase compared to the first eight months of 2004;
Microsoft Windows and MSN Messenger continue to receive the majority of IM attacks with 60%, followed by AOL Instant Messaging (33%) and Yahoo (7%). Utilizing exploits available in Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003, Zotob and IRCbot leveraged real-time chat technologies to wreak havoc at many large enterprise organizations and user communities worldwide. With more mobile workers using IM, and the increase in interconnectivity across heterogeneous networks, Zotob and IRCbot demonstrated how quickly malicious attacks can spread and infect unsuspecting users.
This most recent information validates the rise in targeted IM attacks on corporate environments and the need for both large enterprises and small businesses to prepare and defend against emerging IM threats. Current month over month and year over year trends continue to suggest that IM-borne attacks will continue to grow as hackers capitalize on the growing popularity of IM in both consumer and corporate environments. The IMlogic Threat Center encourages consumers to protect themselves by keeping operating system patches and anti-virus software up to date, and to exercise caution when using embedded links or file transfer capabilities over the IM channel. Corporate IT departments can additionally leverage IM management and security technology to protect their networks from the risks associated with unmonitored and uncontrolled IM usage. “The rate at which IM worms and viruses propagate and mutate is increasing, and the complexity of these threats is growing,” said IMlogic Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Products Jon Sakoda. “The IMlogic Threat Center will continue to keep IMlogic customers updated with the latest tools and information to block IM security threats, provide guidelines on the best practices for secure IM management, and act as a resource for all users to understand the evolving nature and increasing sophistication of real-time attacks.”
Launched with the support of Internet security leaders Symantec, Sybari, and McAfee, and global instant messaging leaders America Online, Microsoft and Yahoo!, the IMlogic Threat Center is the comprehensive knowledge base for known IM and P2P vulnerabilities and provides rapid response and guidance for protection against newly detected threats.
