IMlogic Threat Center Reports Over 1500 Percent Increase in IM Threats in October 2005

November 1, 2005

New threats focus on delivery of increasingly malicious code capable of disabling desktop anti-virus software and logging end user keystrokes to steal personal identities

Waltham, MA, November 1, 2005 - The IMlogic Threat Center, the industry’s first global consortium to provide threat detection and protection for instant messaging (IM), today announced that monthly IM security threats in October 2005 increased more than 1500 percent versus October 2004 and more than 30 percent versus September 2005. As the number of threats grew, the payload carried by the IM worms additionally evolved to become more malicious and destructive. More than 60 percent of the worms identified in the month of October delivered malware capable of disabling existing desktop security software, operating without end user knowledge and undermining traditional anti-virus detection and protection capabilities.

The IMlogic Threat Center released the following statistics highlighting the increasing threat level to business and consumer users of IM applications. The IMlogic Threat Center provides complete data, analysis and discussion of important trends. Key data released include:

Threat Analysis

IM threats in October increased 1500 percent over October 2004;

IM Threats in October increased 30 percent over September 2005;

87 percent of all unique IM threats were IM worms, 12 percent were viruses and one percent were client vulnerabilities;

In 2005, 62 percent of all IM threats targeted MSN, while 31 percent targeted AOL and seven percent targeted Yahoo;

In October, however, 66 percent of new IM threats targeted AOL Instant Messenger, while only 33 percent targeted MSN and one percent targeted Yahoo;

99 percent of all threat activity relied on social engineering to deliver payload;

Traditional anti-virus signature files were available for six percent of reported threats at the time of first detection or registration with the IMlogic Threat Center.

This monthly report reinforces the findings of the IMlogic Threat Center Q3 2005 report, which detailed a more than 2000 percent increase in reported attacks during the first nine months of the year. Thus far in 2005, each successive quarter has shown a marked increase in IM threats.

The IMlogic Threat Center helps companies stay abreast of these mounting attacks via strategic partnerships with Internet security leaders Symantec, Sybari, and McAfee, Postini and global instant messaging leaders America Online, Microsoft and Yahoo! The IMlogic Threat Center is the comprehensive knowledge base for known IM and P2P vulnerabilities and provides rapid response and guidance for protection against newly detected threats.

Protecting Against the Rapid Growth of IM Viruses and Worms The latest release of threat data reinforces the need for enterprises to adopt a layered defense for IM security. Traditional desktop anti-virus software relies on the availability of known virus signatures for detection and control, and is not sufficient to protect enterprises against the rapid mutation and proliferation of the latest IM threats. The exponential growth of IM threats which leverage the global reach and availability of the real time IM networks, coupled with the ability for IM malware to disable industry standard desktop anti-virus products, makes the need for best-of-breed IM threat protection even more critical.

“The alarming prospect of IM threats that disable virus protection software is a wake up call to enterprises to put additional protection in place for defense-in-depth,” said IMlogic Chief Technology Officer Jon Sakoda. “The significant rise in IM virus and worm activity coupled with the development of increasingly sophisticated IM threats requires organizations to adopt a comprehensive security strategy for IM and real-time applications.”
