Norway’s Leading Commercial Television Network Prevents IM-based Cyber Attacks and Downtime with IMlogic IM Manager

November 28, 2005

Waltham, MA, November 28, 2005 - TV2, Norway’s leading commercial television network, is using IMlogic IM Manager™ to stop any type of IM-borne viruses or malware. Since deploying IMlogic IM Manager in May, the network has prevented a number of instant messaging-borne attacks, enabling 1,000 employees to communicate safely in real time.

“It is of utmost importance to us to be on the air at all times,” said TV2 IT Manager Arne Berven. “TV2 is a real-time business and it is important to us that none of the production machines get affected. We are delighted that IM Manager can protect our employees and the business from potential attacks.”

TV2 nurtures a creative environment that encourages people to collaborate widely, both within the organization and beyond. IM is the preferred channel of communication for many of TV2’s news journalists and production staff as they work in real time to create broadcasts. Presence awareness is particularly useful as TV2 has a geographically spread workforce across all major cities in Norway and also in Washington D.C. and Brussels, Belgium.

TV2’s major driver for investing in IM management was security. “We knew that even when you tell people not to click on URL links or attachments via IM, at least 35 percent will,” said Berven. “If we were not protected his would have disastrous consequences for our organization as IM is so widely used. We had to protect our staff by managing and securing the use of IM.”

TV2 examined the IM management and security market with four clear criteria for selection:

product stability with the proven ability to provide the earliest threat detection and prevention against the next generation of IM viruses and worms;

system flexibility to manage a wide range of public IM protocols;

industry expertise supported by an IM security vision and matching development investment to protect TV2 from future IM threats;

a European centre of IM excellence.

TV2 selected IMlogic, which was the only vendor that fully fulfilled these criteria. To immediately prevent further attacks, IMlogic deployed IMlogic IM Manager in two days. TV2 now has an even more proactive approach to stopping viruses and worms with the IMlogic Real-Time Threat Protection System (RTTPS), which works with IMlogic IM Manager to intercept IM attacks before they reach the organization.

“Unlike e-mail attacks that may take hours or days to spread, IM worms can strike in minutes,” said IMlogic Managing Director of EMEA Derek O’Carroll. “We are delighted that IM Manager and RTTPS have proved its value in protecting employees and corporate productivity from increasingly sophisticated IM threats.”
