Varsity Media Group Launches Mobile Storefront, Offering Ringtones, Wallpapers and User Created Content for Mobile Devices
Varsity Media Group, a leading provider of media dedicated to teenagers, and m-Qube, a leading mobile channel enabler for content providers, today announced the launch of Varsity’s mobile storefront located at www.VarsityTV.com, one of the fastest growing online communities for teens.
VarsityTV.com visitors can purchase the latest ringtones, wallpapers, games and user-created content from the mobile store. The mobile store leverages m-Qube’s broad wireless carrier distribution and extensive content partner network, and also allows VarsityTV.com members to upload content they create. “User created content has been an integral part of our business model since 1999 because it allows teens to express themselves. We are pleased that m-Qube offered the flexibility to make this part of our mobile store,” said Kelly Hoffman, Chairman and CEO of Varsity Media Group.
Revenue derived from ringtones totaled over $300 million in the U.S. in 2004 and is expected to increase to over $600 million in 2005 (Consect). According to MindShare Research, more than half of teenagers ages 13-17 now own a wireless phone, an increase of 43 percent from last year. It is estimated that 76% of teens ages 15-19 regularly use their cell phones for text messaging, ringtones and games (Time).
“Our internet and mobile communities have confirmed that today’s teens demand the ability to customize and personalize all facets of their lives,” said Mr. Hoffman. “Bringing a mobile storefront to our thriving online community is the latest step in converging Varsity’s offerings. As we explored our options, it became clear that m-Qube’s cross carrier relationships, content catalogs and ability to scale positioned them as an industry leader.”
“It is obvious that teens are driving the consumption of ringtones and wallpapers," said Andy Miller, SVP, General Manager Media, m-Qube. “We are excited to partner with Varsity Media Group because its unique relationship with teens and high schools gives it a real time view into the purchasing patterns of this valuable demographic.”
