Reveal Imaging Technologies Receives TSA Grant for Development of Next-Generation Explosives Detection System

US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supports Reveal Imaging’s In-Line Check-In Station as next generation explosives detection system as option for integrated airport checked baggage screening

October 27, 2003

Bedford, MA, October 27, 2003 — Reveal Imaging Technologies, Inc., a developer of operationally compatible security inspection systems, announced receipt of a $2.38 million Cooperative Agreement from the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) with a total potential value of $4.75 million. The TSA grant, issued under the “Phoenix” program, will augment Reveal’s ongoing development of an Explosives Detection System (EDS) designed to be integrated into the airport check-in desk.

“ The TSA is faced with the difficult challenge of enhancing security while keeping in check the massive costs associated with integrating EDS units into the automated baggage conveyor systems at the nation’s largest airports,” said Michael Ellenbogen, president & CEO, Reveal Imaging Technologies. “Together with the TSA, we look forward to developing a cost effective solution for the development and deployment of a next generation of EDS machines that will enhance security, while at the same time providing airports and airlines with an alternative in-line option."

TSA’s goal is to stay on the cutting edge of technology development, and this partnership with Reveal supports achievement of that goal. According to TSA, the goal of this agreement is to invest in an integrated solution that revolutionizes the system design for screening checked luggage for explosives. This system design will reduce major construction costs associated with EDS installation, provide for implementation of a less intrusive, more customer-friendly process, while at the same time maintaining the highest level of security.

The Reveal team is uniquely qualified to meet the challenge of developing a next generation of in-line EDS for baggage inspection. TSA’s support of this "certified" explosive detection system is based on a proven track record of success. Each of Reveal’s core team members has more than 10 years of experience in the design, development and certification process for explosives detection systems.

Reveal's technology incorporates a proprietary Computed Tomography (FACTTM) architecture to dramatically reduce the size and cost of the EDS system. By combining the FACTTM technology (patents pending) with dual energy scanning, Reveal's EDS has the promise of delivering the highest detection capability and lowest false alarm rate.

About Reveal Imaging Technologies, Inc.: Headquartered in Bedford, MA, Reveal Imaging Technologies, Inc., is introducing a new paradigm for government mandated explosives detection systems (EDS) for airport security. Reveal’s solution, driven by sophisticated software detection algorithms, is significantly more cost and space efficient than current EDS systems. Reveal brings together security imaging experts with over 100 years of cumulative experience designing, developing and deploying EDS for airport and facility security.
