Welcoming Our Newest Executives-in-Residence (XIRs)

We’re excited to announce that Jim Baum and Ron Paulus, who have each led innovative technology companies through rapid growth and acquisition, have joined GC’s Executives-in-Residence (XIR) program.
As an XIR, Jim Baum will draw from his 25-year track record of building dynamic teams and technology businesses to help next-generation B2B tech companies scale. Prior to joining the XIR program, Jim was president and CEO of two of the highest-profile growth and exit stories in the data analytics category: Netezza and Endeca. Jim helped take Netezza public in 2007 and ultimately drove the company’s nearly $2 billion acquisition by IBM in 2010 — a transaction dubbed the most “disruptive acquisition” of 2010 by Information Week. Jim also led Endeca’s growth from a tiny startup to an entrenched brand for Global 2000 customers, setting the stage for the company’s ultimate acquisition by Oracle in late 2011.
Prior to Endeca and Netezza, he served at PTC as an executive vice president and general manager. Over the course of his 11-year tenure, he managed roles across nearly every facet of the organization, helping the company grow from $11M to $1B in revenue.
Jim has served on a range of corporate boards from startups and fast growth pre-IPO companies to publicly traded companies. He is a trustee at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and co-chair of WPI’s initiative in innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as a lecturer in entrepreneurship at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
Our second new addition to the XIR program, Dr. Ron Paulus, is also no stranger to driving innovation in technology companies. Ron brings a strong track record of improving the quality of both internal operations and patient outcomes in healthcare systems. As an XIR, Ron will leverage his strategic, operational, and domain expertise to support founder-owned businesses in the healthcare services, technology, payor, data analytics, and advisory industries.
Prior to joining the XIR program, Ron was president and CEO of Mission Health, a $2 billion integrated health system serving western North Carolina. During his tenure, Mission Health reduced patient mortality by more than half, achieved Six Sigma medication safety results, improved patient experience to above the 90th percentile, doubled employee engagement scores to more than twice the national average, and became the only health system designated as one of the nation’s Top 15 Health Systems for six consecutive years. Earlier this year, HCA Healthcare acquired Mission Health, forming the largest per capita foundation in America.
Before joining Mission Health, Ron was executive vice president, clinical operations and chief innovation officer for Geisinger Health System, where he drove innovation across Geisinger’s hospitals and its more than 800-physician member group practice. Prior to Geisinger, Ron was co-founder, president, and CEO of CareScience, Inc., an analytics platform used by nearly 1,000 U.S. hospitals to improve quality and efficiency, which was acquired by Premier, Inc. (NASDAQ: PINC).
He serves on numerous boards, including Mercy, Vocera, and Waystar and also is an advisor to HCA Healthcare, Cardinal Analytx, and Strongline. Ron received his MD from The School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA and a BS in Economics from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has been named several times as one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 50 Most Influential Physician Executives.
Experienced, successful entrepreneurs and executives like Jim and Ron are the lifeblood of GC’s XIR program and are essential collaborators with the management teams of founder-owned businesses. XIRs support these businesses with mentorship, recruiting, sales development, and many of the other strategic and operational challenges that come with rapidly scaling a company.
It’s been a busy few months for GC’s XIR program, where we’ve been building out our bench of experienced executives like Ron and Jim who will serve as mentors, advisors, and active board members alongside the founders and executive teams who are building and scaling our growth-stage companies.
