John O. Utendahl
I serve as the President of Impact Initiatives at General Catalyst. I am a seasoned financial services executive and investment banker with over 40 years of experience in the field. In 2023, I retired from my most recent role as the Chairman of the Global Corporate and Investment Bank for Bank of America (BofA). At BofA, I served as the Senior Client Relationship Executive and trusted advisor to C-Suite and Board of Directors leadership at major corporations across various sectors such as industrials, media & telecommunications, financial services & insurance, technology & software, healthcare & pharmaceuticals, aviation, and private equity. As the Chairman, I was accountable for bringing the full power of the bank's global capabilities (banking, markets and advisory) to assist the largest clients by creating innovative solutions for their most significant financial opportunities. I was the lead advisor for over 40 of the bank's most significant and important corporate clients. In addition, I played an active role throughout my tenure at BofA as an advocate for diversity and inclusion in all facets of the bank's operations.
Immediately prior to joining Bank of America, I pioneered the role of Vice Chairman at Deutsche Bank. Again, using C-Suite and Board Member relationships, I established the position and implemented a client relationship management strategy that successfully integrated the senior advisor role into the account team structure. I was able to capitalize upon Deutsche Bank's global platform to create international opportunities for numerous corporate clients.
Before these senior positions at major investment banks, I spent almost two decades as Chairman of the Utendahl Financial Organization, consisting of a broker-dealer, corporate finance advisory and asset management, and established several private equity and real estate funds. The Utendahl Financial Organization was built from Utendahl Capital Partners, LP, established in 1992 - the largest minority-owned financial organization in the country for many years.
I began my career at Salomon Brothers in 1982 as a corporate bond trader and later became a trading desk manager in Merrill Lynch's corporate bond department. I have also served as a Director on several Boards, including the Securities Industry Association (SIA), the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I received a BS degree in Business from Long Island University and an MBA in finance from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, where I was also honored as the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies in 1994.
